How To Design A Chalk Paint Bedroom Furniture?

You’ll probably spend your entire day working on one piece of fixture. However, most of us don’t have the luxury of time. Between juggling our work, house chores, and errands, we barely have time to repaint that bedroom furniture we’ve been planning for several months now.

Luckily, my neighbor, our own local version of Martha Stewart, introduced me to chalk paint. To my delight, a chalk paint bedroom furniture is exactly what I needed. Using a chalk paint eliminates the task of sanding and priming.

All you need is just one can of chalk paint and a little bit of creativity to get the job done. Here are some tips below on how to redesign your bedroom furniture.

Bedroom Makeover

Now that you can finally squeeze in time to repaint your old bedroom fixtures, you can follow these simple and easy steps.

1. Clean your bedroom furniture

Use a clean cloth to wipe off the surface. Wash the fixture with soap and water to eradicate any sticky substance hanging onto your furniture.

A mild dish soap and clean water will do. Give your furniture enough time to dry. Make sure there are no signs of soap and water and it is free from any dust or residue.

A spotless surface will provide you a smooth and even painting job.

2. Apply one or two coats of the chalk paint to your furniture

The amount of coating will depend on the coverage you want for your fixture. If you are trying to conceal a bright and vivid color underneath then you may possibly apply another round of coating.

3. You can opt to distress your furniture

If you want to give your furniture a shabby yet pretty look, once the paint dries out, you can gently sand down the corners and edges of your fixture. Be careful not to overly distress it.

4. Keep it smooth

On the other hand, if you prefer a more smooth and polished look, then skip the sanding and distressing part.

5. Wax it

Once you are satisfied with the result, wax it down with a clean cloth. This will seal in the chalk paint and add protection to your fixture.

Since a wax is resistant to water, you don’t have to worry about water ruining your furniture. Waxing is also optional. If you prefer a more natural look, then you don’t have to wax down your fixture.

Layering Your Bedroom Furniture

Another great idea to re-design your bedroom furniture is through layering. It’s a quick and easy way to bring some depth and dimension to your existing furniture. You can use different colors to create an interesting color pattern.

Layering is simple. Anyone can do it. All it takes is a little bit of practice and you can definitely master the art of layering in no time. Here are some steps you can follow.

What you’ll Need

  • Two different shades of one color of chalk paint
  • Two paint brushes
  • Clear wax
  • Clear plastic wrap
  • Clean cloth

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Determine the amount of coverage you want.

Some prefer to leave a bit of the original furniture color to see through the paint. I personally prefer this as well.

It gives your furniture a hint of color layering while showing a naturally distressed appearance. You don’t even have to sand down your fixture. A distressed look adds personality and character to your furniture.

2. Start with the darker color.

In this case, I am using the color blue for my bedroom furniture makeover. Dip your paint at least ½ and inch to the paint with a darker blue shade.

Start painting over the furniture in small sections. Allow some of the original wood to show in some areas. Remember, since you are layering your colors, you don’t have to provide full coverage.

After coating your fixture, place your brush in a clear plastic wrap to trap in the moisture.

3. Apply the lighter shade.

Use the other paint brush and top your furniture with a medium coating. Avoid brushing too hard or you may end up covering the darker blue shade underneath.

Remember, you still want the darker color to be seen underneath.

4. Dry Brushing.

There are different ways you can achieve a layered look. One is through dry brushing. A dry brush method is a great way to add a distressed look to any piece of furniture.

Once you are satisfied with the effect, unwrap your first paint brush and slightly dip the end in the same darker color. It should be enough to soak the ends of the bristles. Then paint your furniture in light sweeping strokes.

The lighter the strokes, the more layered your color will appear. Dry brushing also eliminates the need for sanding. It will immediately give your furniture a distressed look and save you time and effort.

5. Seal it with a wax.

The wax helps protect your furniture. Massage the wax to your fixture using small circular strokes.

If you are using a clear wax, you will notice that the area you are working on will have a slightly enhanced color. Wipe your furniture with a clean cloth.
