How To Transform Unused Space to An Industrial Bedroom
Every house property has had to deal with maximizing space and undertaking renovations to fit a current need. In my case, when my dad decided to build a separate shelter for his car, we were left with a garage that was used left unused. After seeing some industrial bedroom ideas online, I immediately ran and looked at our garage accumulating dust and imagined how I could transform it.
It was the perfect size for a bedroom, and from then on I embarked on a DIY journey together with my dad.
This transformation is not only limited to garages, any space can be transformed to an industrial design interior because this style can be easily achieved with the right selection of finishing and furnishing.
Here are two basic rules to keep in mind prior to the renovation:
1. Keep a design theme in mind
The problem with having to DIY your interior design will be having to put together all the design ideas you are thinking of. If not carefully planned, these designs may clash and will lead to an uncoordinated interior feel.
Try narrowing down your choices by having images of them printed out and laid side by side; by doing so you are able to eliminate ideas that do not fit or will not compliment the other idea.
Stay focused on your desired final output and lessen the desire of wanting to add more elements to the space.
2. Keep on collecting
An industrial style is defined by its collection of small and rustic pieces; an old pulley, some beaten down wood, and even an overused factory door can create an authentic industrial building vibe.
Make your space more memorable by adding more pieces every time you travel, making sure to stay within the theme. Be patient and understand that your space is a work in progress.
After having established your design idea, you can now clean up your unused space and start the transformation.
Here are some tips that can help in making sure you’ll end up with an industrial bedroom decoration:
1. Check on the finishes
Industrial buildings such as factories and storage spaces are not designed to be fully furnished or painted. This is the same character we should apply with our transformation:
Check the wall, ceiling and floor finishes and see if it needs re-painting or sanding to give extra texture. Walls are generally best when painted white to allow light to reflect and make it look like a bigger space.
Ceilings can be left exposed wherein you can see the pipes to give it a more industrial feel; you can have these painted to match your theme.
Floors on the other hand can be left unfinished, a rough cement finish can be spiced up by placing a colorful carpet or faux fur.
2. Think of what to do with your ceiling

If your space has a closed ceiling wherein panels are covering all the utilities, then it might be best to just leave it as is and just re-paint when needed. If on the other hand it is an exposed ceiling, you can either paint the pipes or just install panels to close it.
An industrial theme interior focuses on how the overall feel of the space is related to industrial buildings - they are usually high ceilings and well ventilated, so be creative with your ceiling finish.
3. Invest on good lighting
Whether you have a closed or exposed ceiling, lighting plays a vital role in making all the components of the room come together.
A bulky and intricate chandelier will let serve as the focal point of the room and direct the viewer to where it is installed, while a simple or utilitarian ceiling lamp will give more emphasis on the wall and room elements.
Determine when will you be using the lights, will you be needing high brightness most of the time, or just mood lighting? This is where your design theme will enter, choose which part of the room you want to showcase before buying lighting.
4. Have a good balance of materials

Wood, concrete, and metal are the most used elements of any industrial space. In renovating, try to create a perfect balance of these three by not sticking into just one material.
If your bed is made of wood, then try to find a table piece that is of metal frame. Create variations to ensure that your space will not feel monotonous and cold. One tip is to choose at least 2 shades of wood or brown to incorporate on your design and spread out those wood elements on your space. Do not cluster everything in one place but create a layout that is open.
5. Make it cozy

As I’ve mentioned above, the materials to be used in an industrial themed design are all very rough. Focusing on just whites and blacks will make it feel like a hospital room and can ruin the mood for visitors.
Industrial buildings were not made to be homey or warm, so the challenge in this transformation is to add elements that will make it feel like home. As simple as it may sound, adding a rug or a carpet can balance the coldness of your room. Instead of just sticking white blacks, whites and grays, put in a dab of color by choosing pastels or bright colored pillows, draping some faux fur on the chairs, and choosing curtains that are warm in color.
Do not be afraid to throw a few colors in your room and I’m sure it will feel more cozy.
